Her mum's accident was the end to an undoubtedly difficult year for Ruth, who announced her split from her Belfast-born broadcasting husband Eamonn Holmes in May, the former couple spending their first Christmas apart in many years as Eamonn spent the festive season with new girlfriend, Katie Alexander.
Joan, 94, who also has dementia, suffered the painful injury after a fall, leaving Ruth desperately worried and regularly updating concerned fans on social media with her progress.
I said at the time thank goodness she hasn't broken anything but the doctor said that a fracture is worse, it takes longer to heal.
