A 14-year-old boy has been stabbed to death on a bus in London this afternoon in what police called an "horrendous crime". Emergency services were scrambled to a street in Woolwich after being called just before 2:30pm on Tuesday. Pictures shared online show a number of police and ambulance vehicles at the scene surrounding a red double-decker bus.

Police said that the stabbing took place on a Route 472 bus on Woolwich Church Road near the junction with the A205 South Circular Road. Paramedics treated the boy at the scene but despite their best efforts couldn't save him. A friend of the boy visited the police cordon before breaking down in tears. He told The Mirror: “That’s my friend. He’s my good friend. I used to see him after school, he didn’t deserve this. He was a nice person. I finished school and my mum told me he got stabbed. He was a very nice person. He was good at football, but I don’t think he was perusing it as a career.”.

So far no arrests have been made with the Met Police saying that the investigation is at an early stage. Officers wearing blue forensic suits were seen taking photographs and examining both inside and outside the vehicle shortly after 6pm. The normally busy major road where the vehicle stopped was closed off from the junction next to Frances Street up to the the junction with the A205 South Circular Road. A passer-by said: “I’ve only just heard what happened. It’s tragic.”.

Superintendent Louise Sargent, the borough commander for Woolwich, speaking at the scene, described the murder as an “horrendous crime”. She said: “I am very sad to say that this afternoon a 14 year old boy has died following an incident in Woolwich. Police were called just before 2.30pm to a report of a stabbing on a bus.
