Scottie Scheffler confessed he's a bit of a novice when it comes to cryptocurrency, despite being handed almost £8million in the digital currency after his victory in The Showdown. Scheffler and Rory McIlroy outplayed their LIV Golf rivals Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka, bagging a prize purse delivered in a sleek black case. The one-off event at Shadow Creek Golf Course was hailed as the "first-ever multi-million-dollar professional sports prize purse in CRO Cryptocurrency.".
The duo dominated LIV Golf duo DeChambeau and Koepka throughout the competition, winning every stage of the three six-hole segments. When presented with his winnings of $10m (£7.9m), Scheffler seemed puzzled about what he'd won, admitting to the reporter: "I... don't know a while lot about crypto but this is good motivation to do some research.".
DeChambeau, on the other hand, was thrilled about the prospect of receiving his winnings in crypto, stating before the event: "It is beyond exciting to have Crypto.com on board to provide a true first with a cryptocurrency-based prize purse.". If Scheffler decides to cash in his crypto at its reported value, he could be looking at over £55million in earnings for the 2024 season, following an impressive year where he claimed seven victories on the PGA Tour, including The Masters in Augusta back in April.
