It was, perhaps, the most fitting way to end an extraordinary year: Scottie Scheffler standing in the dark, cold desert of Las Vegas, holding a prize that he couldn’t make much sense of. ‘I don't know a whole lot about Crypto but this is some good motivation to do some research… and figure out what’s going on,’ the world No 1 said with a chuckle.
Scheffler and Rory McIlroy had just earned themselves $10million in cryptocurrency, after beating Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in an unofficial ‘showdown’ between the cream of LIV Golf and the PGA Tour. ‘What are you going to do with yours?’ McIlroy asked Scheffler. ‘I don’t know,’ Scheffler responded. There’s no rush. It’s not like he needs the money.
Scheffler made $29,228,357 on the PGA Tour in 2024 – it was a new record, breaking his previous history-making haul from 2023. It was also $10m more than his nearest rival, Xander Schauffele. And then, in recent weeks, Scheffler widened that chasm even further. He earned another $1m for winning Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge and then, on Tuesday at Shadow Creek, he began his journey into crypto.
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy won $10million in cryptocurrency on Tuesday night. The PGA Tours star beat LIV Golf rebels Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in Las Vegas. In May, the world No 1 golfer was taken to jail after being arrested at the PGA Championship.
