ALDI shoppers head to the supermarket for great value on their weekly shop. But there are some little-known ways that bargains hunters can save even more cash on their weekly shop at the chain. Aldi is the cheapest supermarket in the UK, according to analysis of basket prices by consumer group Which?.

The discounter was found to be the cheapest in all 12 months of last year for a typical shopping list of 56 groceries. Despite already offering top value for money, you can save more cash with a few steps. Here's how... The supermarket often offers discounts on food with an expiry date of one day or less.

This includes items which haven’t yet been marked down. The discounts on offers vary but the biggest savings of up to 75% can be seen on items with expiry dates of the same day or the following day you could get a discount of 30%. The exact discount can depend on the item and you can expect to see prices automatically reduced at the till.

This is perfect if you've made a meal plan for the week and know exactly when you are going to eat the food you are buying. For example, if you know you will be able to eat an item before it's expiry then you will save case. Some of Aldi's best value items are Specialbuy items that are much more affordable than a comparable item bought elsewhere.

The most popular items sell out very quickly so you need to know what is coming in. Sign up to the supermarket's mailing list where they often send out information on upcoming specialbuys. Or you can keep an eye on Aldi's website where they list all the special buys coming in each week.
