Six German track cyclists are rushed to hospital after head-on collision with car driven by an 89-year-old man

Six members of the German cycling team have been hospitalised after an 89-year-old drove a car head-on into the group. The country's endurance track team, including 2024 track world championship medalists Benjamin Boos and Bruno Kessler, were on a training run in Mallorca when they were hit by a car.
The elderly driver told the police that he had not seen seen the group and was distracted. Spanish news service Ultima Hora report that he tested negative for alcohol and drugs. Some of the athletes suffered serious, but not life-threatening, injuries including broken bones. The athletes were treated on-site and then moved to surrounding hospitals.
The other athletes involved in the accident were as Max-David Briese, Moritz Augenstein and Louis Gentzik.The national coach Lucas Schadlich had been accompanying the group in his car and witnessed the accident. Bruno Kessler (left) and Benjamin Boos were two of the cyclists injured in the accident.

Road accidents involving professional cyclists are sadly all too common. Just last month, Paris gold medallist Remco Evenepoel suffered fractures, a dislocated collarbone and bruised lungs after a crash in Belgium.
And last week, 19-year-old rider Sara Piffer died during a training outing after she was hit by a car driven by a 70-year-old man. The German team had travelled to Mallorca to prepare for the European Track Cycling Championships, which takes place between February 12-15 in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium.
