Six members of Germany's track cycling team were taken to hospital after they were hit by a car in Mallorca. In a statement, their team said an 89-year-old man drove "head-on" into the cyclists after failing to see them. They also stated that none of the riders suffered life-threatening injuries, with 2024 track world championship medallists Benjamin Boos and Bruno Kessler among those involved.
"In the morning, the national endurance track team set off from their hotel in Palma for a training ride and was hit by a car after just 2.7 kilometres," the statement read. "Six athletes suffered serious falls and had to be taken to hospital for medical treatment.
"The driver, who was said to be 89 years old, failed to see the group and drove head-on into them. National coach Lucas Schädlich, who was accompanying the group in his car, was an eyewitness to the accident. "As the direct medical care on site and the subsequent treatment in the surrounding hospitals showed, some of the athletes were seriously injured, but fortunately none were life-threateningly injured.
"Those affected were Benjamin Boos, Tobias Buck-Gramcko, Bruno Kessler (all REMBE rad-net), Max-David Briese, Moritz Augenstein (RSC Ellmendingen) and Louis Gentzik (SSV Gera).". Those six were part of a bigger group of riders who are currently training in Mallorca ahead of the European Track Championships, which are due to take place in Belgium next month. News of the collision comes less than a week after promising young cyclist Sara Piffer was killed after being hit by a car while training.
