Steven Gerrard has been backed to return to club management following his departure from Al Ettifaq. The Liverpool legend has left the Saudi Pro League side by mutual consent, with the club 12th in the 18-team table, having lost eight of their 17 matches this season. Gerrard had been in charge since the summer of 2023 and only signed a contract extension through to 2027 last year. Gerrard has already been linked with a returned English football with struggling League Two side Carlisle United. Reports suggested the Cumbrians’ ambitious American owners, the Piatak family, were considering an audacious bid to land the former England captain.

But while Gerrard’s name is believed to have been discussed at board level, there is little prospect of the former Rangers boss taking charge of the side currently five points adrift of safety in the fourth tier. However, Alan Shearer, one of his former international team-mates, believes Gerrard deserves another crack at management and hopes to see him back in English football soon. “I hope he gets back into management in the UK,” the Match of the Day pundit told Betfair. “He clearly doesn't have to work, but I hope it's not the last we've seen of him or Wayne Rooney.

“I hope someone, somewhere gives Gerrard the opportunity to go in and manage just like Frank [Lampard] is doing really well at Coventry now. Frank has taken Coventry from the relegation places really close to the play-offs. So I hope, very much like Frank, that Gerrard gets another job somewhere in the game.”. GET INVOLVED! Speaking after his Al Ettifaq exit, Gerrard said: "I want to express my gratitude to the club, the players, the fans, and everyone involved for the opportunity and the support during my time here. "From the first day I was warmly welcomed and I have enjoyed the chance to work in a new country with a different culture. So overall I have learnt a lot and it’s been a positive experience personally and for my family as well.

“But football is unpredictable and sometimes things don’t go the way we want. However, I leave with great respect for the club and the country.". Gerrard would struggle to land a top job after being sacked by Aston Villa in October 2022. He spent less than a year in charge at Villa Park, having left Rangers, where he won the Scottish Premiership title. Rooney finds himself out of work after being sacked by Championship side Plymouth over Christmas. Previously, the Manchester United and England legend was axed by Birmingham City after just 15 games at the helm.
