The Met Office has issued weather warnings across the whole of the UK, urging Brits to prepare for the arrival of Storm Éowyn. A rare amber warning for wind is in force across Northern Ireland, northern England and parts of Scotland from 6am to 9pm on Friday. Forecasters have warned of the risk of power cuts, as well as disruption to transport links.

The warning says there is also a chance that damage to buildings and homes could occur, causing injuries and posing a danger to life. While the harshest conditions are expected in the areas covered by the amber warning, further yellow warnings have been issued across the rest of the country too.

In Scotland, a yellow warning for snow is in force from 3am until midday on Friday. The Met Office said "any accumulations across northern England and southern Scotland will be fairly short-lived and largely on hills, where 2-5cm may accumulate in places above 100m elevation and 5-10cm above 300m." However, across the Central Belt, as much as 15cm to 25cm of snow is possible above 300m.

A separate warning for rain has also been issued across Wales and southwestern England from midnight until 9am on Friday. Forecasters said heavy rain could cause flooding of a few homes and businesses, with bus and train services facing delays. It reads: "A band of heavy rain will move northeast across this area later on Thursday night, clearing to the east on Friday morning. Accumulations of 15-25 mm are expected fairly widely, with as much as 40-60 mm over high ground, which may result in some surface water flooding in places.".
