Storm Éowyn has officially been named and is set to bring horror 90mph winds crashing into Britain before the week is out. Along with torrential rain, danger to life warnings, and a risk of snow, the Met Office has detailed exactly what the nation should be prepared for.

The storm has been catapulted across the Atlantic from America after an Arctic blast brought severe snow and plummeting temperatures to many US states. But, coupled with tropical southern air, this has strengthened the jet stream as it travels eastwards towards Britain. Exposed coasts in Northern Ireland, northern England, north-western Wales and western Scotland could feel the impact of the strongest winds. Many of these regions have been placed on an amber national severe weather warning for wind.

Fresh warnings for snow and rain have also been added ahead of Storm Éowyn's predicted track across the north west of the UK on Friday night. This now means every part of the country will see or feel some effects of the storm, with the wrath unravelling into Saturday. People living in the worst storm-hit towns have been warned over power cuts, damage to homes and buildings, and severe travel disruption.

While storms naturally bring gale force winds and torrential rain, they don't often trigger a snow warning. But Éowyn is set to fire across all cylinders, with the Met Office confirming snow is due for some. It says in a newly issued statement today (January 22): "Storm Éowyn will move across the northwest of the UK on Friday, clearing to the northeast on Friday night and will initially bring snow for some, with accompanying rain and wind. This has the potential to cause travel disruption, power cuts and damage to building and homes.".
