Thousands of families are set to get cost of living support worth up to £75 this February half term. The help comes from the Household Support Fund, this is a government-funded scheme which has given local councils pots of cash to support struggling households in their area. Each authority decides how it wants to spend the money, and help can range from free cash payments to supermarket vouchers.
A handful of councils have set aside some of their funding to help low-income families over the half-term breaks, as costs can increase when children are not in school. Here we have listed just some of the councils offering help this year. If your local authority isn't listed below, it's worth getting in touch with yours if your child is on benefit-related free school meals or you're struggling financially, as you could be in line for help.
Waltham Forest Council in London is providing supermarket vouchers to families with children eligible for benefits-related free school meals over the February half term. The vouchers are provided through Edenred and will be distributed through schools. How much you will get through the vouchers depends on the school your child attends and your personal situation. To find out how much you could get and how the vouchers will be distributed, you will need to contact your child's school directly.
Stockport Council in Greater Manchester has extended the Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) programme to cover the February 2025 half-term. The scheme provides children in both primary and secondary school who get income-based free school meals with food and activities over the break. You will need to book a place on the programme before the half term starts, and you can do so through the council's website.
