At least five people were shot in a horror incident at a school in Sweden, amid reports of a "man in a mask" who entered the building and opened fire. Parts of Risbergska School for adults in Örebro, a campus which also has schools for children, was thrown into lockdown after the incident where a witness reported hearing "bangs, probably gunfire" while some parts of the school were evacuated. Those in classrooms who could not escape were placed into lockdown and teachers locked themselves in the staffroom for safety.

Police confirmed five people have been shot and in a later update confirmed four have undergone surgery, with one seriously injured, two stable and another slightly injured. The fifth was the gunman, who is also in hospital being treated for injuries. Earlier reports by the Expressen suggest he had turned the gun on himself. A Orebro police spokesman said "Five people are confirmed to have been shot.

Follow the latest on the shooting on our live blog. “The danger is not over. The public MUST continue to stay away from Västhaga. Students are being accommodated in schools located adjacent to the affected area as well as in the school in question. This is being done for security purposes. The extent of the injuries is unclear. "The operation is still ongoing. The charges are currently attempted murder, arson and aggravated weapons offense. An information point will be set up where relatives and others who have questions can gather. People are again urged not to go to school or hospital. We will return to where the point will be located.".

A teacher at the school sent a text message to someone on the outside saying they loved them. The witness added: "He wrote there was shooting with automatic weapons at the school and they had taken shelter in a room. Then he wrote he loved me.". A witness told Sweden Herald: "I don't know everything. It's unclear. I'm still at the school. I've heard bangs, probably gunfire.". Hospitals in the city, located in the south of Sweden, have been told to empty emergency rooms to prepare for the arrival of those injured so far. Police continue to urge people to stay away from the area as there is a "danger to life", according to police spokesperson Sophia Jiglind.

She added: "There is a risk or threat of deadly violence. The public must stay away from Västhaga right now. "We are on site with a lot of resources and are appealing to the public that they must stay away. It is very important.". Local publication Aftonbladet reported four ambulances are already on site, with at least two more set to arrive. An emergency centre is being set up at the scene. A woman working at a restaurant said several teachers and students have taken shelter at the diner. She added: "They're not allowed to leave, so we're keeping them in here. It's become like a shelter.

"The students say that there was a masked man who went into the school or was at the school. There are between 30 and 40 people here. The police are on the scene and protecting us.". A teacher at Risbergska School described the moment she heard several gunshots in the building this morning. Lena Warenmark told SVT News she was in her study for about an hour. She continued: "Before that, we heard gunshots very close to our study. There were probably ten shots. She describes there were a few bangs first in short succession, a short pause and then a few more.

The school is a municipal adult education school and according to Lena Warenmark, there were unusually few students present as many had gone home after a national exam.". Karin Stenström, Region Örebro's communications manager at the health and medical administration, said: “We have established a special medical management. We have received injured patients. “I cannot confirm how many and I cannot say anything about the injury situation because it is still so fresh.”.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer told Swedish news agency TT: "The reports of violence in Orebro are very serious. The police are on site and the operation is in full swing. The government is in close contact with the police, and is closely following developments.". Another Swedish politician said the shooting illustrates a basic "failure" to keep people safe. Muharrem Demirok, the leader of the Centre Party, told outlet Aftonbladet: "It's terrible to hear what happened in Örebro. School should be a safe place, anything else is a failure. My thoughts go out to those affected and their families.".
