Despite weather warnings being put in place across the UK at the weekend today temperatures hit 12C, treating the swimmers to a far less chilly plunge than usual. Today partakers at Helen's Bay in County Down appeared full of Christmas cheer wearing santa hats and posing in the water - seemingly grateful for the unseasonably warm conditions.

Elsewhere shoppers are dashing to buy last-minute gifts and travellers head home for the festive season. Strong winds battered the UK at the weekend causing flight cancellations and widespread rail delays. Many feared the travel mayhem would throw their Christmas plans into disarray but all warnings have now been lifted due to the improved weather.
