A comedy series that follows the creation of an erotic magazine for women is now available to binge in full in the UK. First airing in 2022, Minx is set in the 1970s and followed Joyce Prigger (Ophelia Lovibond) a feminist from Los Angeles who takes a massive risk and team up with adult entertainment publisher Doug Renetti, played by New Girl’s Jake Johnson. After struggling to secure funding for her dream publication, The Matriarchy Awakens,’ Joyce reluctantly accepts a business offer from Doug, who publishes porn.
While she wants to fill the pages of their magazine Minx with hard-hitting essays, he also says they need to push the boundaries and include details like a nude male centrefold to get customers rushing to snap up copies. When the first season aired, it also got plenty of viewers attention with the fact there was no shortage of full-frontal nudity, which was more so to put Joyce in eye-opening situations than shock audiences.
Reviews were glowing, with the season holding an impressive 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. ‘Minx may be targeting its audience’s funny bones far more than their neither regions, but it still knows how to satisfy,’ Rolling Stone wrote in its review. ‘For all the bodies on display, Minx is, happily, turned on by the life of the mind,’ Variety declared. ‘Minx manages to capture the spirit of the swinging ’70s while examining themes that endure decades later. And it’s damn funny, to boot,’ Decider added.
Meanwhile viewers called it ‘hilarious’, ‘insightful’ and ‘thought provoking’. It was followed by a second season in 2023, which was also praised by critics and viewers alike. However, despite the support the series received, it was cancelled not once but twice. During production of season 2, HBO Max pulled the plug, however Starz quickly swooped in and saved the show. Up Next. But six months after the second season hit screens, in January 2024 the series was again axed. Speaking with Deadline soon after, Johnson spoke about the challenges the series faced, especially season 2 launching a few days into the Sag-Aftra strike, which prevented the cast from being able to promote it. ‘I think the move to Starz, I think HBO kind of doing their HBO thing, or HBO Max, whatever it’s called now, I think that was brutal for [the show]. Then, I think the strike coming out right as we were trying to promote it…my guess is you can’t beat something up that many times and keep going,’ he added.
Many fans lamented the show’s end as an ‘absolute shame’. What I Own: I quit London at 48 and bought my first home in Sussex for £325,000. I bought a house with my partner — but when we broke up, he refused to sell. I build 20ft tiny homes for homeless people (and they only cost £12,000). London's cheapest place to rent revealed — but it might not be for long. Londoners are flocking to this ‘bustling’ neighbourhood 10 miles from the centre.
