Horrifying CCTV shows the moment a woman is flung 100ft through the air after a car ploughs into her as she crosses the road. The speeding driver then flees the scene, leaving the 42-year-old on the ground suffering life-changing injuries. In the harrowing footage, the victim can be seen crossing the road on Princess Avenue in Hull - a busy street filled with bars and pubs - before an Audi A3 travelling at more than 45mph smashes into her.
After the crash, the woman was left needing three operations to treat a number of injuries, including a fractured spine, broken leg, a torn ligament, and a dislocated knee, police said. Driver Luke Gough, 36, fled the scene and his car was found burnt out half a mile away moments after the crash on July 31, 2022. Police said the car had sustained damage to the front that was consistent with striking a pedestrian. He was later arrested for causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
On Monday, he was jailed for five and a half years at Hull Crown Court and banned from driving for life after admitting the charge. His passenger Gemma Johnson, 31, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice and was jailed for nine months, suspended for two years.
Officers found the vehicle had been travelling at more than 45mph in a 30mph zone at the time of the crash. When the pair were arrested, a shard of glass was found in the washing machine that matched a sample taken from the car. And during a forensic examination of the Audi, a blood spot was discovered which was a positive match for Gough.
