A 12-year-old boy who was stabbed to death while walking home in his school uniform has been described as "the nicest kid you could meet". West Midlands Police said the victim was found with serious injuries near Scribers Lane, Hall Green, shortly after 3pm on Tuesday. He was taken to hospital but died from his injuries, the force added.

Police said the boy's family have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers. A boy aged 14 has been arrested on suspicion of murder. The victim is believed to have been a Year 8 pupil at Christ Church Secondary Academy in nearby Yardley Wood.

The school has not yet commented on the tragedy, but on its website says: "Today is a normal school day and we look forward to welcoming students in school." Locals said the boy was walking home in his school uniform when he was attacked near a park. One parent, who did not want to be named, said the victim was found "lifeless" by a passer-by who rang 999. They added: "My son said he was the nicest kid you could meet.".

West Midlands Police said in a statement: "We are continuing to appeal for any information which could help in our investigation. We have set up our major incident public portal (MIPP) where members of the public can submit photos or video evidence.". Police are asking anyone with information to use the MIPP or call 101 quoting log 3324 of January 21. Detective Inspector Joe Davenport, from the West Midlands Police major crime unit, said: "We're urgently reviewing CCTV and speaking to witnesses as we work to understand what happened and why, and who was responsible.
