We’re fast-approaching Christmas Day, which for most of us means a well-earned break from work. And what better way to spend wintery days than snuggled up on the sofa with a hot drink and a great book. Sounds dreamy, right?. If your ‘to be read’ list is a little sparse, fear not: the YOU team has put our heads together to compile the 10 best books released in 2024. From bonkbusters to Booker nominees, here’s the novels we've been captivated by this year.

. The fourth novel by this generation’s most famous author is perhaps her best yet – a mean feat considering her debut, Normal People, shifted more than three million copies worldwide. This one follows brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek, who are dealing with their father’s death very differently. Peter is a high-flying lawyer, though his health and personal life are far more complicated, while Ivan is a 22-year-old competitive chess player and long-time loner, who’s become intensely involved with an older woman. It’s a moving exploration of love, grief and possibility – and, according to our Books Editor Maddy Fletcher, contains the sweetest dog ever written. What’s not to love?.

The YOU office was obsessed with Catherine Newman’s debut novel, We All Want Impossible Things, when it released in 2022. We’re glad to say this year’s follow up, Sandwich, is every bit as entertaining. It tells the story of Rocky, on her annual family holiday to Cape Cod, now sandwiched between her half-grown kids and fully aging parents. She’s looking forward to the idyllic break more than ever – at least until a chain of events spends her spiraling into the past, reliving the tenderness and sorrow of previous summers. Tissues – for tears of sadness and laughter – at the ready.
