“There wasn’t an album they wouldn’t buy, or a drug they wouldn’t try. Then it spiralled out of control. They were left with nothing. This well-crafted debut novel is set to be translated into 20 languages. The story has three strands: in each, a baby boy is registered with a different name, exploring the extent to which your name can determine the course of your life. There is heartbreak and drama in each of these sliding doors narratives. Publishing insiders have been raving about this one for over a year and in spite of its often dark subject matter, it is set to be an enormous hit. (Phoenix, May).

Grosz is a psychoanalyst and Financial Times columnist whose first book, The Examined Life, is probably the most enjoyable ever written about therapy. It was a huge bestseller and here are more tales from the consulting room — this time about love. Grosz will explore jealousy, pain, boredom and betrayal. One specific, tantalising example involves the couple who dread date night after 30 years of marriage. (Chatto & Windus, September).
