Fans of The Beatles were moved to tears by Ringo Starr's memories of his return to the recording studio – after he stepped away from the band. Starr had walked out of the band shortly after the creation of The White Album. Ringo confessed he had been through "hell during this period" and sought a respite from the Fab Four.

He was later left touched by John Lennon and George Harrison’s heart-warming actions upon his return, leaving fans "sobbing". The White Album, celebrated for iconic tracks like 'Helter Skelter,' 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps,' and 'Dear Prudence', was a high point in the band's career. But for Starr, it marked a period of personal struggle.

Despite drumming on each song and penning 'Don't Pass Me By', the strain was evident. In his book, 'Another Day in the Life', Starr details the warm welcome back arranged by his bandmates that helped him view the "crazy" moments outside of their sessions with renewed positivity.

Starr has been candid about his brief departure from The Beatles in August 1968 due to feeling like an "outsider" and not at his best musically but rejoined shortly after to contribute to the band's concluding albums. He talked about his brief departure from the band, saying: "While we were recording the 'White' album we ended up being more of a band again, and that's what I always love. I love being in a band. Of course, it must have had moments of turmoil, because I left the group for a while that summer.".

Ringo bared his soul about his feelings at the time, stating, "I left because I felt two things: I felt I wasn't playing great, and I also felt that the other three were really happy and I was an outsider. I went to see John, who had been living in my apartment in Montagu Square with Yoko since he moved out of Kenwood.".
