Constructed by the fifth Duke of Devonshire with the aim of transforming Buxton into a chic spa town, it was shut down in 1992.
Another striking feature of the town's skyline is the Devonshire Dome, once the world's largest unsupported dome and currently part of the University of Derby.
Perched at an altitude of 1,000 to 1,100 feet above sea level, Buxton holds the title for the highest market town in England.
