We all have different priorities when it comes to picking a place to live. Maybe you’re tied to a big city for work, or a nature buff who’s moved to the sticks for the walks and views. But is there a location where residents are happier than anywhere else?.
That’s exactly what property site Rightmove set out to find. The website surveyed more than 35,000 people to find what they love about where they live, and there was a clear place with the happiest residents: the port town of Woodbridge in Suffolk. Residents love Woodbridge's quirky town centre and stunning waterfront.
The historic location is known for its bustling high street, close access to the countryside and community feel. According to Rightmove, Woodbridge residents scored the town most highly for its sense of community, friendly vibe, and stellar public services like schools and healthcare. All this does come at a cost though: the average price of a house in Woodbridge is £441,569, around £160,000 more than the UK average.
According to the town’s mayor, Robin Sanders, Woodbridge’s main draws include its ‘many independent shops, pubs and restaurants, a long established film industry renowned for independent cinemas, and of course the thriving historic and unique riverside area to enjoy the beautiful River Deben estuary’. We’re not going to lie: it sounds pretty idyllic.
Last year’s cheeriest place, Richmond upon Thames, came in second position – though you’ll need to start saving if you plan on living there, with the average house price at £939,329. Third place went to Hexham (near Newcastle), fourth place Monmouth in Wales, and fifth place Harrogate in Yorkshire, which are all relatively affordable, with average house prices lower than £400,000.
