It might be a cliche, but there’s a reason that January is prime time for people starting a new fitness routine. Not only do we all feel like we need a little reset after a December of over indulgence, but it’s the equivalent of starting a new routine on a Monday – it feels like a fresh start.

If you’re planning on stepping up your fitness in the new year, but find the idea of joining a gym daunting or want to avoid committing to a pricey membership before you’re sure of how long your willpower will last, at home workouts can be a great place to start. Although you only need some simple equipment to get going, there’s no limit on what you can buy to create your very own home workout space.

Whether you’re short on space and need some easy-to-store items or are planning on creating an entire home gym, here’s some great home workout equipment to get you started. READ MORE: Ninja launches Boxing Day sale that allows shoppers to nab a £30 travel mug for under £4.

They can be used for everything from warm ups to improving flexibility and strength, and you can use them on their own or as an addition to your usual routine. This Les Mills set includes three bands with differing levels of resistance, and are small and lightweight enough to be stored anywhere at home or popped into your gym bag.

A yoga mat is another home workout staple. Not only does it create a designated spot to work out in, but it gives you a little extra cushioning whilst you exercise, as well as making your hands and feet don’t slip during movements. This Sweaty Betty one uses soft natural latex to give you secure grip, and is with a weight of 2kg and a thickness of 4mm is light enough to comfortably carry to the gym or roll up into a cupboard or pop under the bed between uses.
