Arne Slot insists Trent Alexander-Arnold remains “fully committed” to Liverpool amid Real Madrid’s failed bid to sign him this week. Speaking in a press conference on Friday morning, the Liverpool manager sought to avoid questions about the England defender’s future but did reveal Alexander-Arnold will start against Manchester United on Sunday.
Champions League holders Real Madrid want to sign Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer in July, when his current Liverpool contract expires, but tried to sign him in January with a bid on New Year’s Eve which Liverpool rejected. Reports from parts of the Spanish media claim the rejected offer was a bid in the region of £20million.
Alexander-Arnold is not the only key player for the Reds who is due to be out of contract in the summer, with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah also approaching the end of their current deals. Slot was asked whether he had spoken to Alexander-Arnold since news emerged of Real’s bid for the 26-year-old.
The Dutchman replied: “I speak to every player once in a while. For Trent that is the same, so yes, I spoke to him. “I’m not going to share my talk with him. There have been links about our players in last six months. He is fully committed to us.”.
Slot added: “I can tell you that he will play on Sunday, and hopefully he brings the same performance as for the last half year because everybody saw how great a first half of the season he had. “He had an incredible game against West Ham, we all saw the pass he gave to Mo. I see him on the training ground every day working his ass off.
