If you’re flying somewhere for Christmas or New Year’s, there are certain festive items you’ll have to leave behind. That’s because the long list of items you can’t take in your luggage includes Christmas crackers and party poppers, so make sure to leave them out of your suitcase to avoid delays at the airport.

Crackers contain gunpowder, which is flammable, while party poppers are also considered a dangerous item. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the UK’s aviation regulator, explains that party poppers are forbidden to be carried by passengers, while Christmas crackers can be taken on board some flights if they are in their original retail packaging.

However, the CAA specifies that travellers should check with their airline, as some forbid passengers to carry Christmas crackers at all. The Ryanair website explains: ‘Wait until you get to your destination to buy party poppers, sparklers, fireworks or Christmas crackers.

‘These are considered explosive/flammable substances – and can’t be carried on board as they contain explosive/highly combustible substances which pose a risk to the health of passengers and crew and the security/safety of the aircraft property.’.

But even if the airline you are flying with permits Christmas crackers on board, that doesn’t necessarily mean you can travel with them. Many UK airports have placed their own restrictions on Christmas crackers. Anyone flying to the US should leave their crackers behind, regardless of the airline or airport, as they have been banned by the Transport Security Administration (TSA).
