Unai Emery moves quickly to agree second Aston Villa transfer after Marcus Rashford deal

Marco Asensio is joining Marcus Rashford as Aston Villa’s second marquee loan signing. The 29-year-old Paris Saint-Germain forward will arrive at Villa Park after the two clubs thrashed out a deal over the weekend. Asensio and Rashford were undergoing medicals on Sunday as Villa boss Unai Emery races to strengthen his squad following several departures this month. The Spain international has struggled to establish any rhythm in the French capital after a string of injuries - although he made an appearance as a substitute last week, confirming his fitness.
Asensio’s versatility across the frontline will help plug a gap up front for Villa, particularly as No.1 striker Ollie Watkins was pulled out of Saturday’s defeat at Wolves due to a groin strain. Jhon Duran’s defection to the Saudi Pro League and Emi Buendia’s £17m move to Bayer Leverkusen has left Emery short of numbers. But the arrival of Asensio and Rashford will bolster his resources up front, although his recruitment team will spend the final day of the transfer window trying to source defensive reinforcements.
Emery had been interested in Chelsea’s Joao Felix - but the Londoners are insisting on a £60m transfer fee rather than any temporary move. And that has scuppered any chance of the Portuguese swapping Stamford Bridge for Villa Park during this window. The Blues are also insisting on a fee to allow Axel Disasi to leave. The French centre-half is another player of considerable interest to Emery. Join our new WhatsApp communityand receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
