An 'underrated' comedy film has just been added to Netflix and people are still wanting a sequel. Though the Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling-starring film released nearly a decade ago, fans are still hoping for a follow-up to The Nice Guys, their laugh out loud movie which bombed at the box office. It made just $62.8million (£50million) on a budget of $50million (£39m) but has since grown into a cult favourite as more people discover the 1970s-set crime comedy.
Fellow actor Patton Oswalt of Ratatouille and Parks and Recreation fame called for the film to get two sequels in a five-star review of the film on X. The film follows Healy (Crowe) and March (Gosling) who team up to find a girl in hiding after Healy is attacked by two hitmen asking for her location. He wrote: "This movie should have made a billion dollars and we should be on the third sequel. A ridiculously funny, entertaining, heartfelt slice of action and comedy with a truly well thought-out mystery at its centre.".
Fellow fans of the film say they went into The Nice Guys not knowing what to expect and came out with a new favourite movie. One user wrote: "One of the best movies me and my best friend went and saw and we had no clue what it was about just knew Russel and Ryan were in now it’s one of our fav movies forever.". Another added: "I did watch it. It was nice and deserved more attention, but it did feel flat in some moments, most probably a directing flaw. Crowe and Gosling were phenomenal. Their on-screen chemistry makes me wanna see them paired again.".
Director Shane Black has gone on record as saying there could be a sequel to The Nice Guys, though it would be a tough pitch to producers. He said: "There is a chance, but it requires a great deal of things to go right at the same time because there are legalities, and there's also the fact that, honestly, the first movie didn't make a lot of money. "And the next one will probably cost a great deal. So you go 'Hey, you want to make a sequel to this?' and they say 'How much?' '$100 million.' 'No.' But hopefully someday. I think there's enough generated awareness and enthusiasm.".
Calls for a sequel were seen by those sharing fond memories of the film. One user wrote: "One of my all time favourite comedies, favourite movies. So good. So clever and fresh and ridiculous and such a solid mystery and buddy cop movie. We definitely live in the wrong timeline with only one of these movies.". Another wrote: "I love this movie and I'm so sad nobody has really seen it. Genuinely laugh out loud funny." A third added: "Criminally underrated. The chemistry between Gosling and Crowe made the film a real gem. We needed at least 2 more outings with the pair.".
