Pet owners are always keen to ensure the safety and well-being of their beloved animals, but they might be unaware of everyday items that could endanger their pet cats. TikTok vet Amir Anwary has shed light on some of these risks in a recent video. He warned: "These are four extremely common cat toxicities that every cat owner should be warned about. Number one is Acetaminophen, or Paracetamol - all versions of it are toxic to cats.".

Amir pointed out that although this common painkiller is safe for humans, for cats it's a different story. He continued: "A tiny bit for them is extremely toxic. It can cause breakdown of the red blood cells, they can become lethargic, they can even die in severe cases. "Next is garlic and onions. So, this is going to be quite controversial, because I know a lot of people use garlic as a natural tick and flea repellent and, yes, it can be used as that but, at higher doses, just like with onions, it can cause breakdown of red blood cells. I would avoid using both these ingredients in cats and dogs.".

Furthermore, anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, which are typically safe for humans, can trigger "severe reactions" in cats, Amir noted. Even small amounts can be incredibly dangerous and may lead to kidney failure in serious cases, reports the Express. Pet owners have been urged to be vigilant about the dangers of lilies in floral arrangements. "Every bit" of a lily – from its pollen to the water it's placed in – is toxic and potentially "deadly" to cats, an expert warned.

The video sharing this message has amassed over 4,000 views and prompted wide-ranging responses from viewers, highlighting personal experiences and appreciation for raising awareness. A commenter said: "All flowers belonging to the lily family are toxic to cats." Another recounted their own experience: "My cat got lily pollen on her chin. A night at the vet's, and a £1,000 bill later, thankfully she is fine now.".

Meanwhile, a third viewer expressed gratitude, stating: "Thank you. Keep educating us on cat safety." Paracetamol, although common in human medicine, is extremely harmful to cats, with just one tablet able to cause fatality. Similarly, medications like Ibuprofen can trigger severe health complications, including gastrointestinal issues and stomach ulcers due to irritation. Experts advise keeping garlic and onions out of reach since they belong to the Allium plant family and are known to induce anaemia in cats by destroying red blood cells if ingested.
