Wayne Rooney previously admitted he wants a chance at the Manchester United managerial position - but now faces an uphill task after his departure from Plymouth Argyle. The Premier League icon has been relieved of his duties at the Championship club, following a second successive defeat that cemented their place at the bottom of the table. Argyle's last win in the league came at the beginning of November with six defeats and three draws putting the final nail in Rooney's coffin as manager.

The 39-year-old's record as a head coach has been dismal to say the least, with disappointing stints at Derby Country, DC United and Birmingham City adding to his poor form as a manager. Despite these setbacks, Rooney is determined to land a senior position at one of his former clubs - namely United or Everton.

Speaking on Match of the Day after his Birmingham City sacking in early 2024, Rooney said: "Managing Manchester United or Everton is the aim, these big jobs are where you want to get to. But it's a process I have got to go through the steps and get myself back on track. I want to get myself back into management to make sure in the next 10 years I'm hopefully in a position to go into one of the big jobs.".

Rooney's first stint as a manager came at Derby Country, where he took charge between January 2021 and June 2022 - winning 24 games, drawing 22 and losing 39 with a victory percentage of 28.2%. His next stop was DC United in Washington, where he took charge of 53 games and won just 14 of them between July 2022 and October 2023.
