Wayne Rooney is adamant he remains the right man to lead Plymouth Argyle to Championship safety despite their latest heavy away defeat on Boxing Day. Yesterday's 4-0 loss at Coventry City was the fifth time the rock bottom Pilgrims have conceded four or more goals in an away league game this season.

Rooney's side are reeling from their fifth defeat in their last six games and their form on the road is the worst in the Football League, having taken two points from 12 games. They have also scored just three goals and conceded a staggering 33. Now two points from safety, Plymouth are currently preparing for a trip to fellow strugglers Oxford United on Sunday with pressure mounting on Rooney.

The 39-year-old, however, has once again waved away talk of the sack. Asked if he was still the right man to lead the team, Rooney replied: 'I believe I am. I know how football works, I'm not stupid, you need to pick up results. Wayne Rooney has insisted he remains the right man to lead Plymouth Argyle.

'The biggest frustration for me all season really is we look like two different teams at home and away. So psychologically is there an issue? It's something we're looking at.'.

He added: 'I'm sure the fans have questions, I'm sure a lot of people from the outside will, and I'll do my best to answer them as best I can.'. Rooney is just seven months into his three-year contract at Home Park and recently appointed Mike Phelan, Sir Alex Ferguson's former No 2 at Manchester United and his former coach during his own spell at Old Trafford, as his assistant manager.
