Scott Mills has taken over from Zoe Ball as the host of the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show. The presenter was given the primetime morning slot, as predecessor Ball left to spend more time with her family. Mills, 51, has been forced to defend his pay packet, which is expected to be high, saying he has “worked his whole life” to get to where he is today.

But what do we know about his career? Read on to find out more:. Mills is a voice that has been heard on the radio for decades. He grew up in Eastleigh, Hampshire - on the south coast of England - and began his radio career at the age of 16. He attended Shakespeare Infant School and Crestwood College, but moved to London, when his career started to pick up.

He is close to both his mum Sandra and dad Pete, who have split - and they both regularly have featured on his radio shows in the past. Mills also has a brother named Wes. The BBC releases the salaries of their staff every summer as part of their annual review.

The official amount he is being paid to take over the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show has not yet been made public, but is expected to be upon the release of the 2025 data. Mills previously had a 2023/2024 salary of £315,000, up from £300,000 in 2022/23 but that is expected to have increased again with his new role.

Speaking of the pay hike, he said: “I’ve been doing this since I was 16 and I'll tell you how much I got paid then - £20 a show. And it was a five-hour show in the middle of the night - 1am until 6am. Obviously there is always curiosity around salaries because they get published every year.
