Todd Kohlhepp was born on March 7, 1972, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His parents divorced when he was young, which led to him being raised by his mother and a stepfather who he disliked. Reportedly, Kohlhepp was aggressive to other children at nursery and displayed cruelty towards animals from a young age.

Eventually, he was sent to a psychiatric hospital in Georgia for three and a half months because he was unable to get along with any of his classmates. In 1983, he was sent to live with his father who taught him how to make bombs and encouraged him to collect weapons.

Kohlhepp’s father was largely absent and had several girlfriends, whilst raising his son. On November 25, 1986, Kohlhepp kidnapped Kristie Granado in Temp, Arizona. He threatened her with a gun before attacking her at his own home. Afterwards, Kohlhepp walked the then-14-year-old Kristie home and threatened to kill her family, if she revealed his crime.

However, Kristie went to the police which led to Kohlhepp’s arrest. He was charged with kidnapping, sexual assault and committing a dangerous crime against children. Kohlhepp pleaded guilty to the first charge, but the other charges were eventually dropped.
