Former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury made a cryptic message in his shock retirement video - but the meaning behind it has finally been revealed. The 'Gypsy King' stunned the boxing community on Monday after announcing his retirement from the sport of boxing. Fury said in a post uploaded to social media: ”Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet. I would like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single minute of it. And I’m going to end with this… Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody see you on the other side. Get up!".

The Morecambe brawler suffered the first defeat of his professional career last May to Oleksandr Usyk. Both men would go head-to-head for a second time seven months later. Despite starting the sequel well, 'The Cat's' raw ability proved too much for Fury - who went on to lose a second time to his heavyweight rival.

It's not the first time the Brit has hung up his glove, and it remains unclear as to whether or not December's clash with Usyk will be the last we see of Fury inside the famous squared-circle. In his latest retirement video, the 'Gypsy King' made a bizarre reference to Dick Turpin, but who was he?.

Turpin was a famous highwayman in the early part of the 17th century and was eventually executed in 1739 at the age of 33. A masked robber and killer, his name has lived on even to this day. Nearly 100 years later, Turpin was famously the leading character in William Harrison Ainsworth’s 1834 book Rookwood - a historical and gothic romance that describes a dispute over the legitimate claim for the inheritance of Rookwood Place and the Rookwood family name.
