A teacher and teen pupil have been killed after a gunman burst into a Wisconsin school. Police initially said five people had been shot dead but they later revised that figure down to three. They revealed a teacher and a teen pupil were among the dead.
The teacher and teen were shot by a 17-year-old female student, according to Madison Police Department chief Shon Barnes. Officers were today alerted to reports of a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison. Two students are said to be in a critical condition. One of the dead is understood to be the shooter.
Officers found a handgun at the school following the shooting. Chief Barnes did not specify whether the weapon was that used in the shooting. He said the shooting was confined to one space. It was unclear whether that space was a classroom or a hallway.
Students were not being rushed into interviews, Barnes said. He continued: "We're going to give them an opportunity to come in and speak to what they may have saw when they feel ready.". Survivors of the shooting took buses to a reunification centre following the incident, according to NBC News. The FBI is understood to be at the scene and is helping local law enforcement.
"Today is a sad, sad day, not only for Madison but for our entire country," Mr Barnes told reporters during a press briefing following the shooting. He said police were alerted shortly before 11am and did not fire their weapons when they went into the school. Mr Barnes suggested the gunman died by suicide.
