Detective Inspector Nicole Milner, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was a distressing incident for the young woman involved and we have been working hard over the last 48 hours to understand exactly what happened.
The young victim had been walking along Lenton Road in Nottingham city centre shortly before 1am on Thursday morning when she was assaulted.
Close to the entrance to Nottingham Castle, a man approached her before pushing the young woman to the floor and sexually assaulting her.
DI Milner added: “Although he is not a suspect, we believe that this man has vital information about what happened and we urge him to come forward without delay.
