A DARTS star had to be rushed to hospital on Christmas day after cutting his finger while carving ham. Jermaine Wattimena had the worst possible preparation for his second-round clash with two-time champion Peter Wright. The Dutchman set up one of the biggest matches of his career by beating James Wade in the second round, before spending some time away from the oche over Christmas.

But he suffered an accident while carving the ham for his dinner as he sliced his finger. Wattimena went to hospital for the injury and was spotted on stage with a plaster over the wounded digit. Sky Sports commentator Glen Durrant explained why Wattimena was patched up.

He said: "Jermaine Wattimena had a nightmare couple of days. "While having Christmas dinner he cut his finger, on his non-throwing hand, when carving the ham and ended up going to the hospital.". His opponent Wright also endured a nightmare few days leading up to the tie.

But it did not let him affect his play as he returned to form nearer to his best, reminding fans of his talents after a misfiring year.
