An illegal immigrant who said he was a teenager when he violently assaulted a worker during a robbery at a branch of Wickes in Berkshire was accused by a judge of lying about his age. Karandeep Singh, who was jailed this week for almost five years following a trial at Reading crown court, claimed he was only 18 years old when he left a member of staff at the hardware store in Slough with a head wound on May 25 last year.

Singh carried out the attack with 34-year-old Satwant Singh after a member of staff challenged them as they tried to steal spirit levels from the shop. Karandeep Singh failed to turn up for his trial and - after being arrested on a warrant - denied he was the same Karandeep Singh who had been at the Wickes store.

Fingerprint evidence proved this to be a lie that 'wasted precious police time', said Judge Sarah Jane Campbell. The court heard how the two men attended the Wickes store in Farnham Road and were recognised by staff, who had seen them acting suspiciously before.
After picking up a spirit level, Satwant Singh was challenged by a store worker named Morgan Duffy. The co-defendant initially claimed he was going to pay for it, but then brazenly walked out without doing so. Karandeep Singh said he was aged 19 when he violently assaulted a shop worker during a robbery - a claim that was questioned by Judge Sarah Jane Campbell.
Satwant Singh, 34, was found guilty of robbery and jailed for three years and eight months. When Duffy attempted to grab the spirit level, Satwant Singh grabbed him and dragged him outside, where Karandeep Singh hit him in the head with the spirit level, the court heard.
