A British man living in Australia has shared the cost of everyday goods in a major supermarket - prompting both citizens and tourists to slam the country's economy for its 'out of control' prices on essentials. George Redfern took to TikTok this week to highlight the price of chocolate, milk, cheese and Coca Cola whilst shopping at his local Coles supermarket.

Posting a video from his account, @georgeredfern25, the content creator and backpacker took his 26K followers on a tour around the store as he was left shell-shocked at Australia's 'crazy' cost of living crisis. In the clip - captioned: 'Cost of living in Australia' - George was brought to a halt after stumbling across a multipack of Coca Cola cans.

The multipack contained 30 375ml cans of the soft drink, priced at an eye-watering $50 - equivalent to approximately £25. Next, George showcased the cost of Coles' own-brand block of Colby cheese, priced at $13.90 for 1kg, which equates to around £7.

He then headed to the confectionary aisle, where he zeroed in on a 180g bar of Cadbury Caramilk that had been reduced on offer from $7 (£3.53) to $4.90 (£2.02). Finally, George paid a visit to the dairy aisle, where a two litre bottle of A2 Full Cream Milk was on display for $6.90 - equivalent to £3.48.

The content creator recorded himself walking out of the store with a startled expression, as he playfully remarked: 'How am I going to survive out here?'. Thousands of viewers flocked to the comments, where many tourists and citizens slammed the 'corrupt' government and expressed outrage over the country's 'ridiculous' prices.

One Australian wrote: 'Sadly our grocery stores like to play a game , double the price , then run a 50% off bringing it back down to normal prices , you have to shop smart unfortunately.'. Another commented, 'It’s not a cost of living crisis, it’s a price gouging crisis,' while a fellow Australian said, 'It’s got so expensive since Covid. It is ridiculous for food now.'.

A fourth fumed, 'The most Corrupt government in the world unfortunately, allows for price fixing and Gouging by all big Corporations that give kick backs!!!!' as another added, 'Out of control government needs to do something about this.'. Another wrote: 'Is everyone living in Australia living underground??, everyone saying “that’s cheap” we will see how cheap it is when the prices jumps AGAIN in a month or two.'.

However, not everyone resonated with George's video, as one person argued: 'Okau well that's a normal price for chocolate and cheese but that coke is usually on sale for $28 and you showed a branded milk. Coles is affordable.'.

It comes as a man who works three jobs but is still struggling financially has slammed the cost of living crisis in Australia, saying home ownership is now unattainable for most Australians. Chris Booy, who is in his 30s and lives on the Sunshine Coast, vented his frustrations in a video shared to his YouTube channel.

'I have never earnt more money but I have never felt more broke,' is the title of his video. Mr Booy explained he worked about 60 hours a week across three jobs including in the insurance sector, as a DoorDash and UberEats driver and content creator on YouTube.
