John Legend has revealed that he and wife Chrissy Teigen are considering making a permanent move out of Los Angeles following the devastating wildfires earlier this year. The Eaton and Palisades Fires, which sparked on January 7, destroyed nearly 17,000 structures and killing at least 29 people. Legend, 46, and his wife, 39, were among the A-list residents forced to flee their home, taking shelter in a luxury hotel along with their four children.

However, the musician admitted that there is now a 'collective trauma' in the area that has made the couple seriously consider relocating to New York. Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Legend explained: 'Chrissy and I have always considered returning to New York, where we once lived. 'We probably will, once our youngest ones grow up a bit.'.

The couple and their children had only just returned home from a vacation on January 7, with the Palisades Fire starting to ravage the city just hours later. In the interview, the singer recalled seeing the flames and billowing smoke from the Palisades fire and noted how their 'fears grew' after watching the devastation on TV.

'When the Sunset fire began to expand on January 9, the danger felt too close for comfort,' he continued. 'That night, my wife and I gathered our four kids, four dogs and bearded dragon and drove south to a hotel in Carlsbad.'. At the time, Teigen has shared photos of her and Legend sheltering in the room, and also highlighted that their pets were with them too when she posted clips featuring bearded dragon Sebastian.

Legend added: 'We didn't return until the following week. Our home was safe, but many weren't so fortunate, and the threat still looms. 'The fires were a collective trauma that shook everyone, including our kids.'. The move would be a U-turn for the couple after they chose to sell their Manhattan units in 2022. Located in the Nolita neighborhood, their two penthouses were sold for $18 million. The couple bought the first penthouse unit for $9 million in 2018 and the second in 2020 for $7.7 million, according to property records.

Speaking about the decision to move at the time, Legend told WSJ that it was largely down to work commitments. 'We've realized that because of work and everything, we're really mostly going to be in Los Angeles, so we're going to focus our home-building energy and renovation energy on what we're doing in LA,' he told the publication in 2020. He added: 'We love being there. But we're just not there enough to justify putting in the time and energy to combine apartments.'.

At the time, he hinted at the fact that the city hold a special place in their hearts as he continued: 'I miss it all the time. New York is always going to be my favorite city.'. Elsewhere, the couple did suffer a loss last month after the sudden death of their French bulldog, Penny. Teigen shared the devastating news by posting an emotional tribute which read: 'Our beautiful little tripod queen, penny, passed on peacefully in her sleep today. Born the same day John and I got married, 11 years ago, she was there for us for every baby, every loss, every joy.'.
