Two Australian cricketers suffered serious injuries after clashing in the outfield while attempting to take the same catch during a Big Bash fixture. Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams were in action for the Sydney Thunder against the Perth Scorchers during the first innings. Perth batter Cooper Connolly chipped the ball into the air, with Bancroft and Sams both sprinting in an attempt to catch it.
With only eyes for the ball, they collided as the ball hit the deck and Connolly ran through for two runs. But concern immediately turned to the two stricken stars as they remained on the turf. After a delay, Bancroft returned to his feet and walked off to the dressing room with blood pouring from his nose. Sams remained on the outfield and was taken off on a stretcher.
It was later confirmed both Bancroft and Sams had been taken to hospital for further assessment. Play at Optus Stadium in Perth was delayed for 12 minutes before the match resumed. “There’s been a horrendous collision,” Mel Jones said on commentary for Fox Cricket. “There’s concern here.
“Both players fully committed to the ball, eyes on it. Didn’t see each other coming. This is what you don’t want to see. Medical staff out there immediately. The major concern is around Daniel Sams. “Good signs there as it’s Cam Bancroft on his feet actually walking off the ground. Looks like some damage done to his nose. Such courage – it was all eyes on the ball for both of them.”.
