Experts previously told Metro the drones, which were compared to UFOs, may have been from hobbyists but could have been being used as surveillance from malicious foreign actors. Before taking office, Trump urged for the drones to be shot down, adding that he believes the former administration knew more than it was stating publicly.

But in an update yesterday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt poured cold water on the conspiracy theories during her first media briefing. ‘After research and study, the drones that were flying over New Jersey in large numbers were authorised to be flown by the FAA for research and various other reasons,’ she said, referring to the Federal Aviation Administration.

‘Many of these drones were also hobbyists, recreational and private individuals that enjoy flying drones. In time, it got worse due to curiosity. This was not the enemy.’. Leavitt did not elaborate on what type of research the drones were conducting.
