Miriana Conte has been selected to represent Malta at this year's Eurovision Song Contest with a song that's attracted attention on social media over one particular lyric. The country - which has yet to win the international contest - held its annual televised national final on Saturday, with singer Miriana, 24, having been among the candidates in the selection process. She went on to win with the song Kant (Singing), meaning that she will represent Malta in Basel in May, following Switzerland's victory at Eurovision last year.
She had competed against 15 other acts but was declared the winner after receiving a total of 182 points, which included 94 points from the public vote. Miriana - who has competed to represent Malta in the past - was eight points ahead of Kristy Spiteri, who placed second with 174 points. Although most of her song is performed in English, the chorus - and its title - include 'Kant,' which is said to be the Maltese word for 'singing'. It's been stated that it marks the language's return to Eurovision after a 25 year absence.
Miriana sings in the chorus of her Eurovision entry song: "Why should we let other people decide? We could be having the time of our lives. Let down your walls come and dance to my vibe. I do it all the time, yeah, I do it all the time. Serving kant. Do, re, mi, fa, s-s-serving kant.". Her pronounciation of the title word has attracted attention over its similarity to "c***" and in the context of the other lyrics. Eurovision has highlighted its meaning in Maltese though by referring to the song as Kant ('Singing').
One person questioned on TikTok: "What did she just sing the c word" Another said: "Is she saying what I think she is saying?!?!?" Whilst a third asked: "Erm. Is she saying c u next Tuesday!" Amid discussion on the platform, one viewer wrote: "It's a play on words, not that complex to comprehend." Someone else teased in a comment recently: "The Maltese word for singing.. may just cause a little bit of a stir this year.".
Someone else said: "Haha this is outrageous in the best way." A third wrote: "This is shocking." Kant has been met with praise this week, with one person reacting to the performance: "Ohhhh have I found my new hyper fixation song." Another said: "She is amazing and her song will stand out. Happy for her.". Not everyone is impressed though, with one viewer writing: "This song is so corny, it's so bad." Another reacted: "Ain't no way Eurovision songs got THIS bad." Others have questioned if the song will remain in its current form in the semi-finals, with one person writing: "Let's not kid ourselves… we know exactly why she's using it, especially considering the word before it is in plain English. Yes it's a play on words, but it's going to be changed imo." Another asked: "Is it even allowed to have these lyrics at Eurovision?".
Following the news that she had been chosen to represent her country, Miriana said in a clip shared on Instagram: "Hello Eurovision fans! It's Miriana Conte from Malta.
