The FBI has unearthed 2,400 previously undisclosed records linked to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The discovery came following an executive order by President Donald Trump demanding their release. The newly identified documents, comprising approximately 14,000 pages, had not been reviewed by the official disclosure board, raising questions about the government's handling of the historic case.

A spokesperson for the FBI confirmed the discovery to the Mirror. "In 2020, the FBI opened the Central Records Complex and began a multi-year effort to first ship and then electronically inventory and store closed case files from FBI field offices across the country," the FBI said. "The resulting, more comprehensive records inventory, coupled with the technologic advances in automating the FBI's record keeping processes, allows us to more quickly search and locate records.

"The FBI conducted a new records search pursuant to President Trump's Executive Order issued on January 23, 2025, regarding the declassification of the assassination files of JFK, RFK, and MLK. The search resulted in approximately 2400 newly inventoried and digitised records that were previously unrecognised as related to the JFK assassination case file," the agency added. "The FBI has made the appropriate notifications of the newly discovered documents and is working to transfer them to the National Archives and Records Administration for inclusion in the ongoing declassification process." The White House was briefed on the discovery on Friday when the Office of the Director of National Intelligence presented its disclosure plan.

Jefferson Morley, vice president of the Mary Ferrell Foundation, which hosts the most extensive online collection of JFK assassination records, described the revelation as significant. "This is huge. It shows the FBI is taking this seriously," he said. "The FBI is finally saying, 'Let's respond to the president's order,' instead of keeping the secrecy going.". The contents of the newly uncovered records remain undisclosed for now. Trump's order to release all remaining classified documents related to Kennedy's 1963 assassination aims to put to rest long-standing speculation over whether Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone or was part of a broader conspiracy. Despite the renewed transparency efforts, experts remain sceptical that the final release will provide a definitive answer to the mystery.

Theories have persisted for decades, with some alleging that shadowy government operatives or organised crime figures played a role in Kennedy's murder. The 1992 JFK Records Act mandated that all documents about the assassination be transferred to the National Archives and made fully public by 2017. However, during his first term, Trump blocked the complete release of records on the advice of the CIA, a decision he reportedly later regretted.

A partial disclosure under President Joe Biden followed, though no major new revelations emerged. "Everything will be revealed," Trump pledged on January 23 while signing the latest order, which also calls for the declassification of records related to the assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has been nominated as Trump's Secretary of Health and Human Services, has previously asserted that both his father's and uncle's deaths were the result of orchestrated conspiracies.
