Burnley have snapped up former Tottenham academy starlet Marcus Edwards on loan from Sporting Lisbon. Clarets head coach Scott Parker knew Edwards from his time as a Spurs player, and the connection was enough to clinch the deal for the Championship promotion hopefuls. Immediately after signing, Edwards told the club website: “It feels amazing. Burnley is like a Premier League club. I’m really happy to be here.
“I know Scott from my time at Spurs. I know what he’s like. He’s ambitious, he’s driven. We had a good relationship back then so when I knew he wanted me to come that was enough for me. “From knowing what he’s like and how he is and the fact that Burnley is such a big club in general. It made sense. “The main thing now is to get promoted back to the Premier League. I’m coming here to try and get myself into the team. I hope we can make it over the line this season and I hope Burnley fans will enjoy watching me play too.”.
Born in Enfield, Edwards joined Spurs’ academy system as an eight-year-old and made his senior debut for Tottenham in an EFL Cup tie nine years ago. Edwards was likened to Lionel Messi earlier in his career by former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, who was a huge fan of the England youth international. Speaking back when he was in the hotseat, Pochettino said of Edwards: "His qualities, it's only looks, his body and the way that he plays, remember a little bit from the beginning of Messi.".
More recently, Edwards has caught the eye for Sporting Lisbon in Europe, including against his old club. He was even backed to feature for the England senior team by Ruben Amorim, now the head coach of Manchester United. “Marcus is very talented. He’s one of the best players in playing between the lines. He took a little while to adapt to the Portuguese lifestyle,” Amorim said previously. “He has all of the talent and he can get much better and get to the English national team. He has to focus more on training and all that is around it.
“Football is not just the matches, it’s everything in between. I trust him a lot. He has a lot way to go but I think we did excellent business in signing him.”.
