A student has slammed their teacher for continuously pronouncing his name wrong every day during the class register. The student, named Johan*, explained how his teacher kept pronouncing his name as John* - and would get annoyed when he refused to answer to this moniker. He said on Reddit: "I have a non-English name that is similar in spelling but different in pronunciation to a common English name. For example, Johan instead of John. Just like with this example if you pay attention the difference is clear.

"So every day this one teacher would call out the name John. And as we had no kids called John in our class nobody would answer. The first few times after the silence I would put my hand up and politely ask if the teacher meant me and reaffirm that my name was in fact Johan. "Nothing changed. Every day he calls out John. So I start ignoring it. It's not my name and to continue to use the wrong name when you have both been corrected and the correct name is written before you is rude.".

In response, the teacher shouted at him for ignoring him - and gave him an after-school detention to teach him a lesson. Knowing this was unfair, the student told his dad about the situation, who went above the teacher's head and set up a meeting with the principle. He added: "This teacher has a meltdown, starts screaming at me that I should reply because 'it's close enough' and puts me in detention after school the next day. I go home that night and tell my parents who are not impressed. My dad comes into the school the next day and we have a meeting with us two, the Headmaster and the teacher in question.

"All through this meeting my dad refers to this teacher exclusively as 'Mr Brown' despite the teacher's name not being that. The teacher takes offence to this and accuses my father of being rude for not addressing him correctly... and then the penny drops and he realises what my dad is doing. "The teacher tries to bluster his way out of this claiming it is different as he has an entire class full of pupils but the Headteacher cuts him off and says there is no excuse as he had a list of names to read from.".

Commenting on his post, one user simply said: "Your dad is mint." While another shared their own story, adding: "We once got a class detention because someone laughed whilst the teacher was talking, and nobody would own up to it." And a third shared: "[I got one for] talking on the way to fifth period. Didn’t know the teacher that gave me the detention so I gave him a fake name and didn’t go Luckily got away with it.".
