Manchester United and Arsenal have been warned they will be investigated after their players were involved in a 20-man mass brawl - with points deductions previously being dished out as a punishment. The two heavyweights were involved in a highly entertaining FA Cup third round tie, which the Red Devils eventually won on penalties. In the second-half tempers flared as both sets of players came together after a penalty was given.
Harry Maguire took issue with Kai Havertz after he went down and earned his team a spot kick. The United man was left fuming with his opponent as words were exchanged before Manuel Ugarte was seen confronting Arsenal's German forward. Referee Andy Madley wasn't shy in dishing out yellow cards as he attempted to wrestle control in the capital, booking nine individuals, including Mikel Arteta. Former official Keith Hackett believes there is punishment coming both clubs' way for failing to control their players.
He told Football Insider: "The mass confrontation which may have also seen a player headbutting an opponent will be the subject of an investigation by the Football Association. Years ago, I was in the middle of a mass confrontation involving what was a 21-man brawl.
"I decided not to red card anyone on the basis I might have had more than a handful walking in the direction of the tunnel. So I submitted a detailed report to the Football Association, who investigated and both teams were deducted points. I have no doubt that both teams will be charged for failing to control their players.
