Jaap Stam has offered to coach Manchester United's struggling defence after the club legend claimed new head coach Ruben Amorim is already under pressure. Former Dutch defender Stam said he would love to return to Old Trafford - although he joked that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and company are yet to get in touch.

United visit Wolves this evening still reeling from a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday. They remain 13th in the table with Amorim unable to get his players performing consistently after little more than a month in the job. Stam was part of United’s Treble winning side in 1999 and won three Premier League titles in succession before being controversially sold by Sir Alex Ferguson because of comments made in a book. The 52-year-old has also managed a number of clubs, including Reading, but is presently not in a job.

And Stam told SportLens: “I’d love to coach at Manchester United but they haven’t picked up the phone. “I think everyone who has been associated with the club would love to go back and help. Having been in management myself I have coached and helping them in any role would be great.

“I’m always open for talks because I’d love to see the club back winning trophies and maybe I could help coach the defence, but with the manager lots of new staff have come in so they have plenty of options. But you never know.”. Stam believes United should already be looking towards next season - but for that campaign to be successful they still need to improve performances and results.
