Patrick Mahomes' mum has shared that the NFL star's grandad is "hanging on" in hospice care ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl LIX clash with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Chiefs quarterback is hoping to make history on Sunday night as his squad look to become the first team in the Super Bowl era to win three Lombardi trophies in a row. But ahead of the game in New Orleans, Mahomes' mother has offered a heartbreaking update on the health of her father - and Patrick's grandather.
Randy Martin's health took a downward turn in September, when he was admitted to hosptial. He managed to return home for Thanksgiving, but his daughter Randi – Mahomes' mother – revealed on Instagram in January that her dad had been moved into end-of-life care. She confessed to People that she's been keeping Patrick informed about Randy's situation, but has been reluctant to "bug" him as he prepares for his third consecutive Super Bowl appearance.
Despite having bad days, Randy's excitement for Patrick's pursuit of his fourth Super Bowl ring is "the one thing that he remembers.". Randi added said: "He's watching, and he's excited.". "I know that it has meant a lot to him. And I think he's hanging on because he wants to see his grandson do an amazing thing or just let him play. "I mean, he must be such a proud grandpa, so proud, reports the Mirror US.
And my mom was very proud and his other grandparents [were too]. " Randi has been providing occasional updates on her father's condition via social media. In one post, she asked for prayers, saying: "Prayer warriors, please pray for my daddy. He is in the hospital and is not well. " Throughout the Chiefs' journey to the Super Bowl, Randi has been a constant presence. After the AFC Championship game, she shared a snap on social media of her posing on the field with her son Patrick and his wife, Brittany. Also featured in the photo were Randi's other children, Mia and Jackson, as well as her ex-husband, Patrick Sr., from whom she split in 2006. "Blessed," she captioned the post.
Patrick and his teammates are gearing up for their third consecutive Super Bowl, where they'll face off against the Eagles at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans this Sunday evening. Despite his packed schedule, Patrick managed to squeeze in some family time on Friday night, heading out for dinner with Brittany, teammate Travis Kelce, and his girlfriend Taylor Swift. The Chiefs are slight favourites according to the bookies ahead of the kick-off in The Big Easy, thanks to their track record of triumphing on the grandest stage. Mahomes earned his first Super Bowl ring in 2020 when the Chiefs overcame the San Francisco 49ers in Miami.
They followed this up with another win in the big game in 2023, besting the Eagles in a high-scoring thriller in Arizona. This was backed up by a nail-biting overtime victory over the Niners in Las Vegas just last year. If Mahomes gets his hands on the Lombardi Trophy this Sunday, he'll make history as the first NFL quarterback to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
