January's cold blast is here to stay, as nine regions remain poised for another layer of snow and ice. Some of the nation's vulnerable population, including the elderly who are no longer eligible for Winter Fuel payments, may be struggling to stay warm. Pensioners may be opting to keep the heating off in order to save money in the face of expensive energy costs. As a result, the thermostat in their homes could be dipping to uncomfortable and potentially dangerous levels.

The UKHSA and the Met Office has extended its cold health alert until January 12, placing scores of people at risk. It says: "[There is a risk] of a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions. We may also see impacts on younger age groups. [There will be] challenges keeping indoor temperatures at the recommended 18C leading to more risk to vulnerable people.".

The British Red Cross has issued some crucial advice for elderly people trying to heat their homes, and themselves. It recommends heating just one room during the day to save money, but has also given some tips that don't require turning radiators on. The main advice is to keep curtains open in the daytime, even if it's freezing cold outside. It says: "Open your curtains during the day - the sun still provides warmth even in the winter months. Make sure you close them as soon as the sun sets to keep the warm air in. Investing in thicker curtains, or thermal curtain liners, will help keep the cold air out and prevent heat loss.".
