Former champion boxer Paul Bamba made a heartbreaking admission just a few weeks before his tragic death. Bamba only recently became champion after picking up the WBA Gold Cruiserweight strap following his win over Rogelio Medina in New Jersey. The victory was his 14th by knockout in 2024, breaking a record set by legendary heavyweight Mike Tyson. The American, who was born in Puerto Rico, held a 19-3 record over the course of his career.
He was close friends with pop star NE-YO and became the first to sign with his management company. NE-YO and Bamba's family released a joint statement which read: "It is with profound sorrow that we announced the passing of beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives. He was a fierce yet confident competitor with an unrelenting ambition to achieve greatness. But more than anything he was a tremendous individual that inspired many with his exceptional drive and determination. We are heartbroken by his passing and kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this difficult time as we collectively navigate our grief.".
Just a few weeks before his passing, Bamba made a heartbreaking admission about how he struggled in the build-up to his clash with Chris Avila in April 2023. Taking to X - formerly known as Twitter - Bamba revealed he had to lose 22lbs in three days and claimed that fighting with a concussion gave him slight brain damage.
In a post uploaded to X, a fan was quick to take a swipe at Bamba last month, saying: "Least he had the balls to fight AT. You got slapped by him and he gave you ‘brain damage’ lol.'' Clearly left enraged by the post, Bamba was quick to issue his own response as he replied: "Nah fighting Avila with a concussion and losing 22lbs in 3 days gave me slight brain damage. Which was a bit scary and I had to take 8months off so it’s not a joking matter.".
