IF you owned a PlayStation 2, you might have a prized game gathering dust at home. Fans of the iconic early-noughties console are willing to hand over serious cash for its most collectible titles. Sony's PS2 came out in Japan in March 2000, before landing in Britain on November 24 that same year.

It sold stupendously well, with over 160 million consoles shipped globally over its lifespan. And one of the best-known games from the PS2 era was 2001's survival horror: Silent Hill 2. According to video game collectibles tracker PriceCharting, a sealed copy of the game could go for as much as £485 – and possibly even more.

If you've had your sealed copy professionally graded, the game is said to be worth as much as £1,049. Even if you've opened it, you can still get a bit of cash. A complete-in-box version of the game is said to be worth £69 – while the loose disc is valued at £48.

If you have the box with nothing else inside, you could get £18. And the manual on its own has an estimated value of just under £18. There's some good news and bad news with these estimates, however. These prices are just estimates based on previous sales of the game across the internet, rather than guarantees of cash.

The downside is that you might not get anywhere close to these values if you sell your game. But the upside is that you could end up bagging even more if you find the right collector. There's also a chance that the value of your games could go up the longer you hold onto them too – but it's all one big gamble.

So think very carefully before flogging your prized games and consoles. Silent Hill 2 was a hit video game released on the PlayStation 2, as well as Microsoft's Xbox and Windows PC. It came out in 2001, following on from 1999's original Silent Hill. The Konami hit followed widower James Sunderland who travels to the eerie town of Silent Hill after getting a letter from his dead wife.

These are the estimated values for some collectible PlayStation 2 games, according to PriceCharting... Ratchet & Clank Collection. Tekken 4 [Special Edition]. Ultimate Spiderman [Limited Edition]. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 Mutant Nightmare. God Of War Collection.

The European release of Silent Hill for PS2 in the UK featured a second 'Making-Of' DVD disc. It sold over a million copies globally in its first month after release, and was widely praised by critics. Silent Hill 2 is now an iconic part of gaming history – not just for horror titles – and is a prized collectible for fans of the series.
